On the corner of Hickory and Vermillion sits a chance to make Streator, Illinois a destination for artists and entertainment again.
A new Majestic Theater could and will revive downtown Streator and acknowledge 105 years of history.
Did you know a German Opera House once stood in Streator? The cultural legacy may not be forgotten but once the structure was leveled it could never again truly remind the City of it’s rich heritage, nor provide the City another cultural gem it could be renowned for.
While there is yet time we need to act to restore the Majestic and keep history and live stage entertainment alive and flourishing for Streator.

Robert Endres

Since I've been mentioned frequently in this thread I'd like to comment. I was the largest contributor to getting the Majestic projectors. Working at Dolby Laboratories in New York at the time I was able to secure some discounts for the projectors and the associated Dolby equipment. I also paid to have our two best installation engineers in New York come out to install the equipment. I was shocked when Katie's partner who owned the building called cursing me out and ordering me to get "my" projectors out of the building as I had given him what so many other independent theatres at the time were seeking - a way to convert from film to digital projection. The Majestic had one of the best digital installations around at the time of its closure. Katie did not board the theatre up, but I was glad that she was able to get the projectors out as they would have been sold. She always planned to reinstall them and reopen the theatre but as she has noted a long list of obstacles has thwarted her plan. The Majestic is one of Streator's few remaining links to the its past. There is value in preserving a town's history and many small town theatres have done that. See for example the Fischer Theatre in Danville. The last time I was in it it was in worse shape than the Majestic with large holes in the roof and ceiling. Now it's a beautifully restored performing arts and civic center. It can be done! It's time Katie got some help and encouragement from the community - not vilification.
Majestic Theatretag:majesticshows.com,2005:Post/69911752022-06-10T12:20:12-05:002022-06-10T12:20:12-05:00Family Pride Festival - Ottawa, IL - June 11, 2022
FAMILY PRIDE FESTIVAL Ottawa, IL

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A group of volunteers aimed at restoring one of Peoria’s oldest theaters spruced up the place Saturday morning.

The Madison Theater Preservation Association held a spring workday on the historic building Saturday. Volunteers grabbed paintbrushes and gave the restaurant part of the building a fresh coat of paint, while others swept and tidied up the theater area.

Madison Theater donated to preservation association by owner

Cody Giebelhausen, the secretary of the Madison Theater Preservation Association, said the goal is to reopen the theater for tours this summer.

He said there’s still a lot of work to be done before it fully reopens and welcomes acts through its doors once again.

“The theater will look and feel much like it does right now with the beautiful plaster, but it will have all new mechanicals, all new electric,”Giebelhausen said. “Some of the plaster will be restored, the paint will be refinished. 18 months of work and $35 million worth of stuff need to be done.”

He said the roof has been patched and, for the first time in 10 years, there’s no longer water leaking inside the building.

Right now, the complete renovation is on time and expected to be completed by the summer of 2024.

The Des Plaines Theater, built in 1925 and shuttered in 2014, is preparing to reopen Oct. 1 after a $6.6 million renovation.

Rivers Casino, based in Des Plaines, provided $2.2 million of funding, while the city covered the rest, according to the Chicago Tribune. Theater operator Ron Oneseti will lease the building, which survived a bomb in the 1930s and a fire in the 1980s, and run it as a venue for live entertainment and dining.

“It ended up being more of a renovation project than we thought,” Des Plaines City Manager Michael Bartholomew told the Tribune. “The building is 100 years old and it looks like it was never maintained over those 100 years.”

Developers preserved original elements such as tile in the lobby and an art deco-style stage front and a marquee was rebuilt to look almost identical to the original.

The theater that can seat close to 1,000 people will host acts including local performers and tribute bands. The second floor will house a speakeasy-style bar and a pizza restaurant with a rock `n’ roll theme.

Des Plaines hopes the theater will prompt more businesses to open up in the area. “It’s really about economic development,” said Michael Bartholomew, the city manager.

The archival release - a three-CD live album consisting of 23 tracks and clocking in at over 3 hours long - is a Baltimore show from May of 1977.

Off The Wall / Off The Charts. . .

- Debuts at No. 2 on Top Album Sales, tying for the act’s highest-rank on the 31-year-old chart.
- The band hit No. 2 five times previously, all with Dave’s Picks efforts. The Grateful Dead has now placed 101 different collections onto the Top Album Sales chart, with the vast majority of them being live efforts.

On the Billboard 200 chart, Dave’s Picks, Vol. 41 debuts at No. 13 – tying for the Grateful Dead’s highest debut ever (matching the No. 13 debut and peak of Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40 last year). The band last went higher on the Billboard 200 with 1987’s In the Dark, when it peaked at No. 6 (Aug. 22, 1987-dated chart).

It earns the band its 110th career entry on the Billboard 200, extending its record for the most among groups.

Dave’s Picks, Vol. 41 also marks Grateful Dead’s 51st top 40-charting album on the Billboard 200. The band continues to have the most top 40 albums among groups since the chart began regularly publishing on a weekly basis in 1956. The acts with the most top 40 albums on the Billboard 200 are: Frank Sinatra (58), Elvis Presley (57), Barbra Streisand (54), Bob Dylan and Grateful Dead (51 each). (Thirty-three of Grateful Dead’s 51 top 40-charting albums are from the Dave’s Picks series.)

Photographer / author, Lisa S. Johnson, has a new book: "Immortal Axes." Armed with a macro lens, an incredible eye for detail, and a truly inspiring vision, Johnson takes the world of fine art photography on a rock and roll joyride. Each intimate photograph is accompanied by a touch of musical history, an anecdote or personal storytelling moment.

We talk with Eric Mlyn at Duke University about the school's new course: “Long Strange Trips: The Grateful Dead and American Cultural Change.”

Happy Lunar New Year! About a quarter of the world, including much of East Asia, is celebrating Lunar New Year, and the beginning of the Year of the Tiger. From '79 to '89, Jerry Garcia's main axe was named Tiger. We hear some Tiger driven guitar tracks!

Below is the Mission statement of Here and Again Inc.

Here and Again Inc 501 C 3 Non-Profit Mission Statement:

To lift people up and enrich their lives through the arts while providing affordable, educational, and recreational activities in a safe clean and inviting environment for people of all ages and groups through sound business and management practices. Dedicated to the preservation of historic theatres and like properties in downtown locations within the Midwest which have the potential to create an economic anchor for their community. Creating new economic and employment opportunities through education in film, media, theatre production, radio, and the fine arts.

The business plan for the Majestic Theatre calls for working with Here and Again Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting the arts and entertainment industry to educate and create employment in the entertainment field. Summer House Entertainment Inc. will attract clients from a 50+ mile radius of the venue hosting live National Acts opened by local artists who perform in a Here and Again Inc program called Song + Story. We will also be able to host film festivals and local events as well as first run movies.

The National acts and events that play the theaters are an economic boom to the communities. Patrons who attend events will often spend the night (or two) at local hotels, buy gas, and eat in restaurants.

Raising the quality of life with a vibrant theater attracts employers who want their employees to be happy in the communities in which they live. This is classic economic development. A theatre is an anchor for downtown development.

Mixing Song + Story participants with National Entertainers gives local up and coming talent the opportunity to network with entertainers who have been successful, giving them more opportunity for success in the entertainment industry.

WRWO 94.5 FM (Low Power) Ottawa Community Radio Continues to improve and support the community with good information. We would be able to do interviews with National Artists when the Majestic Theatre is able to open.

Duke University offered a Grateful Dead course and the school is currently showcasing a "Dead and Duke" exhibit. "Long, Strange Trips: The Grateful Dead & American Cultural Change" was a multidimensional and interdisciplinary examination of how ideas form, inspire, intimidate, and ultimately stand the test of time. The course explored the significance of how ideas can go from the margins to the mainstream through notions of authenticity and cooptation. We talk with the professor of the class.

I have told this story before. It was told to me every Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember. I hesitated in telling it again this year. Dad has been gone since 2001. Since I lived with it every year of my life, so must you. I carry the torch.

The 82ND Airborne had hastily been sent into battle without winter clothing and without being resupplied. Most had been on leave after Operation Market-Garden. My Dad recounted riding into battle on the back of a truck filled with gas cans for Patton’s tanks covered with blankets. They picked up ammunition from retreating troops on their way in.

Whenever the weather turned cold and snowy here in Illinois, Dad would comment about how someone was suffering from the cold. I knew he was remembering those he had lost during the war. He once told me that while heading to the front with a message, he had come across a soldier dead frozen over a machine gun, and he wished that he were him. He said “His troubles were over. Mine were still ahead of me”.

77 Years ago, on Christmas Eve, in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium, My Dad, Bob Dumke was serving with the 82Nd Airborne, 2Nd Battalion 505 Head Quarters Company. Dad was a runner who went from Battalion Headquarters carrying messages to men, his friends, on the front line. He was in the Ardennes Forest near the three river bridges at Trois – Ponts in Belgium.

My Parents business was Dumke’s greenhouse and flower shop in Ottawa, Illinois. Dad made grave blankets that he delivered to the cemetery (he made sure there were grave blankets on some young men from our community killed during Vietnam). Mom would make the most beautiful wreaths and roping. By Christmas, they were often tired and pretty worn out. We didn’t have material things living in three rooms behind the greenhouse. There was much love and many visitors. Our door was always open to friends. We often added a plate for a visitor at the dinner table.

Our family celebrated on Christmas Eve. Dad would fondly talk about his Mother Emma, a Swedish immigrant to the USA. How, when he was a child, they would decorate the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve with candles. How beautiful it would be. He had a deep love for his mother, who was gentle and kind. She had passed away when he was just 16 from Tuberculosis.

We put up our tree on Christmas Eve. Our tree had the big multi-color bulbs. As we celebrated, Dad would get quiet. You could tell, his thoughts would be someplace else. He would pull me up on his lap and whisper in my ear. His big rough hands would pat my legs, full of gentle kindness. He would tell me how, during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII, he along with Battalion Headquarters would be moving forward.

They had to move a family out into the cold and snow on Christmas Eve. There was a mother, father, and two small children. 82ND Battalion Headquarters would use their home. The home would be near the front line of battle soon. It would not be safe. They had to leave their home with only what they could carry on Christmas Eve, out into the snow and bitter cold. Dad’s voice would crack, with a lump in his throat. His eyes would well up, and he could hardly get the words out. Tears would stream down his face. I can still feel his pain. Every Christmas Eve, for as long as I can remember, he mourned for that family who was displaced by war on Christmas Eve during the Battle of the Bulge in the deep cold Ardennes winter.

Dad had gone to the front, sent guys out on patrol, crawled into a Fox hole to sleep while they were out. The guys threw their blankets and tree branches over him. A phosphorus grenade hit, and he threw the blanket and tree branches off (which he said saved his life) his arms and face were burned, and he was evacuated from the battle.

He rejoined his unit and was with them when they liberated Wobblin Concentration Camp in Ludwigslust, Germany. He told me he saw men alive, and dead stacked like cord wood for as far as the eye could see. Never take freedom for granted.

The past year (or two) have been difficult with Covid as our enemy and deep divisions among people and their political views. I remind you we have more in common then not. If we take time to let compassion into our hearts and heads the world will be a better place. Talking to each other and finding our common ground beats doing battle.

I am grateful to be a “descendant of Airborne nobility” per remarks made to me by General John Vines a few years ago.

We will soon gather as best we can with our loved ones. May we remember our soldiers who are away from home, some in harm’s way

Please be safe and hold the memory of our Paratroopers close. Let not what they fought for be in vain.

Join me and pray that there be peace and love on earth and joy in all our hearts.

Merry Christmas,

Ron Onesti speaks to the gathered dignitaries Thursday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the renovated Des Plaines Theatre.

Closed to the public for more than seven years, the historic Des Plaines Theatre will be hopping with live music Sunday.

Actor Kevin Costner and his Modern West band are set to perform, marking the return of entertainment to the newly renovated, art deco theater at 1476 Miner St.

"Guests will be treated to an evening of Hollywood grandeur," said Ron Onesti, president & CEO of Onesti Entertainment, the company running the city-owned theater. "The theater has been restored to its 1925 splendor, with perfect acoustics and a stunning interior."

Mayor Andrew Goczkowski is similarly excited about the reopening.

"I'm extremely proud of this theater's rebirth," he said. "This is an exciting day for Des Plaines."

With the curtain ready to rise, here's a look at the theater and the renovation -- by the numbers.

• 2018: The year Des Plaines bought the theater for about $1.3 million from a private owner. It had been closed for four years because of building code violations.

• 6.7 million: The city's estimated share of the renovation cost, in dollars.

• 2.2 million: The amount Rivers Casino donated to help with the purchase and renovation, in dollars. Rivers doesn't have an ownership or management stake in the theater.

• 3: The number of years the renovation project took.

• 998: Seating capacity.

• 13,668: The building's size, in square feet.

• 2: Restaurants planned for the theater. They'll be called Bourbon 'N Brass and Des Pizza and should open in November.

• 99: In dollars, the lowest base cost of tickets still available for Sunday's show. Tickets can be purchased at desplainestheatre.com.

• 5 p.m.: The scheduled starting time for Sunday's show.

We pay tribute to George Frayne, a.k.a. Commander Cody, alt-country pioneer, who joins the great jam in the sky. Not only was he the frontman for The Lost Planet Airmen but he was Jerry Garcia's neighbor. The Grateful Dead's soundman recorded a Commander Cody show which was released last year. The soundman, Owsley Stanley, recorded a Johnny Cash show which will be released later this month!

Jerry Garcia will release GarciaLive Volume 17. The release will showcase recordings from Northern California in 1976.

We hear Commander Cody cover a Johnny Cash song. Johnny Cash covers a Bob Dylan song. All tracks recorded by Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley, and Jerry Garcia covers a Bob Dylan song. Mr. Dylan recently announced new tour dates.

It would be so cool to bring them back for a show.

Leader Peter Albin, a country-blues guitarist who had played with future Grateful Dead founders Jerry Garcia and Ron McKernan, met Sam Andrew, a professional rock guitarist with a jazz and classical background. After playing together at Albin's home, Andrew suggested they form a band. The pair approached guitarist James Gurley, the resulting threesome playing open jam sessions hosted by entrepreneur Chet Helms in 1965. Helms found them a drummer, Chuck Jones, and Big Brother and the Holding Company was formed at their first gig, the Trips Festival in January 1966. In the audience was painter and jazz drummer David Getz, who soon displaced Jones.

Big Brother went on to become the house band at the Avalon Ballroom, playing a progressive style of instrumental rock. Feeling a need for a strong vocalist, Helms contacted Janis Joplin, who at the time was considering joining up with Roky Erickson of The 13th Floor Elevators.
Big Brother and the Holding Company is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1965 as part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jefferson Airplane. They are best known as the band that featured Janis Joplin as their lead singer. Their 1968 album Cheap Thrills is considered one of the masterpieces of the psychedelic sound of San Francisco; it reached number one on the Billboard charts, and was ranked number 338 in Rolling Stone's the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album is also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

I own two historic theater, (Long Story how I got here) The Majestic Theater in Streator IL, and the Will Rogers Theater in Charleston IL. Both are in dire need of restoration.

The Majestic hosted performances by several well-known stars, such as Groucho Marx, Jack Benny, Ed Wynn, Eddie Cantor, Sophie Tucker and Eva Tanguay. The Will Rogers is on the National Historic Register.

My business plan calls for working with the non-profit organization Here and Again Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting the arts and entertainment industry to educate and create employment in the entertainment field.

My Corporation, Summer House Entertainment Inc will operate the theater as a for profit. We will attract clients from a 50+ mile radius of each venue hosting live National Acts opened by local artists who perform in a Here and Again Inc program called Song + Story.

I am currently developing a product line related to the theatres. Proceeds from the sale of our art product line go to support historic restoration efforts.

Please visit www.MajesticShows.com or www.WillRogersCharleston.com

The Majestic is in an Opportunity Zone 17099964300, TIF and Enterprise Zone (the City of Streator has no TIF funds available for the Majestic) and the Will Rogers is also in an Opportunity zone track 17029000500, TIF and Enterprise Zone.

Please reach out to me if you would like to support my endeavor to restore these historic venues.

P.S. The local Small Business Development Center Executive has suggested that I solicit letters of support from talent who would perform on the Majestic / Will Rogers Stage or Host Digital Media / Film events to support my business plan.

I am asking if you would write a letter of support for the restoration of the Majestic and Will Rogers Theatre - venue. If you would pledge to a paid performance on our stage or in our venue at a mutually agreed upon date in the future.

Both of these projects are very important to the communities and extremely expensive. If you can do more to help it would be greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to raise the money to restore the Majestic. In case inquiring minds want to know.

The City of Streator funded the competition with $350,000. In TIF funds and $100,000. Revolving loan fund. (These are no longer available). This was done under City Manager Scott Wrighton who told me there are no TIF funds available for the Majestic even though it is in a TIF district. I met last year with the new city manager David Plyman who told me that the downtown Streator TIF was supporting the Northpoint Streator TIF. That the deal Scot Wrighton made cash strapped the City of Streator.

I had hoped for a tourism grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce to help with the restoration, Covid 19 killed that.

This is not an easy project to fund. Please reach out to me if you want to help. I have created some products to sell from the Majesticshows web site. Please feel free to visit and share.
